The Hungarian government supports Sweden and Finland's NATO membership and has submitted ratification documents to the National Assembly, Minister Gergely Gulyás told reporters at a briefing on Saturday.
Gulyás, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's chief of staff, reportedly said that NATO's expansion to include the two Nordic countries would be ratified by mid-December at the latest. When asked by a journalist whether the addition of Finland and Sweden would strengthen NATO, Gulyás replied that he hoped so.
He added that whether enlargement was in the interest of Hungary's national security could be debated, but said that was reportedly irrelevant now. Hungary and Turkey are the only NATO countries yet to ratify Sweden and Finland's entry into the alliance. a process that began shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine in February.
