Countries should strengthen their own defenses to become more independent from both the bloc and Washington, says French President.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that European NATO members should be more autonomous. and less dependent on the US-led alliance for its own security.

He made the comments Wednesday night while speaking to reporters in Paris after returning from a summit in Amman, Jordan. "You shouldn't rely on an alliance.

It's something  I have to choose, something I work with," Macron said. “We need to reconsider our strategic autonomy. Macron cited "defense technology and capabilities" as areas in which European nations should seek to reduce their dependence on the alliance. , and in particular the United States.

However, he added that member states should not seek to break away from the bloc or develop an alternative to it. "There is no European security architecture without strategic autonomy, within NATO and with NATO, but it does not depend on NATO," he said.

Macron also referred to the ongoing hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, in which the latter has received broad Western support. While reaffirming his support for the "absolute defense of Ukraine," he reiterated that Moscow's security concerns also needed to be addressed. "When I talk about guarantees, I mean all  these countries, for us, but also for Russia," said Macron. That means  one of the key issues we need to address, as President Putin said,

has always been said, is the fear of NATO coming to your doorstep and deploying weapons that could threaten Russia. all, including Russia.

This stance sparked a barrage of criticism from Ukraine and some EU states, with Poland, Slovakia and the Baltic states openly rejecting Macron's proposal. Russia has repeatedly signaled  that it is ready to speak to Ukraine  and the West at large, insisting that its own interests must be taken into account if negotiations are to take place.

Moscow has blamed Kyiv for the lack of diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. On Wednesday, the head of the Russian Federation Council , Valentina Matvienko, said there was “no precedent for negotiations  in the near future: there is nothing [to discuss] and with nobody.

High-ranking officials in Kyiv have repeatedly issued bellicose statements, and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy has vowed to win back the former Ukrainian. The regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye, which joined Russia in early October, and Crimea, which broke away from Kyiv in 2014. Zelensky  even "forbade" himself to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
