Governor Ortom snubbed Atiku and praised Peter Obi as a candidate with the ability to prosper and lead Nigeria to prosperity. The Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) governor said so when Obi visited victims of the state's floods.
Ortom's comment comes days after his Oyo colleague Seyi Makinde endorsed Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 presidential election. Ortom and Makinde are among five PDP governors calling for Senator Iyioricha Ayu's resignation as national president of the PDP.
They had withdrawn from the campaign team of Atiku Abubakar, the PDP's presidential candidate, stating that peace would only prevail if Ayu resigned. But in an interview with VOA Hausa, Atiku ruled out Ayu's resignation, saying the party has emerged from the crisis.
Speaking in Makurdi, the capital of Benue, Ortom described the Labor Party presidential candidate as the best option for the country. If Nigeria has to make a decision, Obi is one of the best candidates we have in this country, in terms of education, in terms of character, in terms of accomplishment, in terms of outreach, in terms of being pan Nigerian.
In terms of industrialization and passion to ensure our country breaks free from where we are, from uncertainty security, and from economic troubles to economic vitality and lack of proper social life, you (Obi) have the ability to do things work. And Peter Obi, because of your background, you have the ability to do that.
If I were God I would have said anything, but I'm not God. Ortom said once God has decided who will be the next President of Nigeria, no one and no structure can stop that person. In particular, Ortom advised all frontline presidential candidates to sit down and agree on one candidate.
If I wasn't in the PDP, Peter Obi would have been my candidate, but I'm in the PDP, that's my handicap, but my prayers are with you," he told Obi. Obi has previously said the deal he struck with some offended PDP governors, including Ortom, is for a better Nigeria.
