Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe praised his team after Saturday's 4-0 win against Aston Villa, saying it had been one of their best games yet and giving particular praise to their goalscorers.
Only a late winner for Tottenham Hotspur on a visit to Bournemouth prevented the Magpies from finishing third in the table thanks to a superb win and some great goals including a penalty and header from Callum Wilson and a superb goal from Miguel Almiron.
The boys fought really well. It was a little first half, very intermittent, luckily we excelled in the second half. It's one of the best performances of the season," Howe told Sky Sports.
"I'm very happy for Callum, penalty shootouts are never easy but he scored well. He was the heart of our good football... It was a superb finish from Miguel," he added.
Newcastle are fourth in the table on 24 points but Villa slipped down to 15th on 12 points after a disappointing performance. Villa caretaker Aaron Danks saw his team beat Brentford 4-0 last week only to lose here by the same result. , was optimistic at the final whistle.
"The league is ruthless and can punish you if you don't have a good time. The penalty was the right decision. We knew they were going to have a moment of momentum and they were ruthless. but that's what the league can do," he told the BBC. "Newcastle have positioned their players cleverly.
There were small tactical moments that hurt us. We need to find a way to stay in the games during these times. Unfortunately the game has ended," he added. Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery will be in charge of Villa from Tuesday.
