Russian Mercenary Group Advances In Bakhmut Eastern Ukraine

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has reached a new intensity when British intelligence reports that the Kremlin-backed paramilitary group Wagner  has made significant gains in the front-line town of Bakhmut.

According to the latest intelligence update from the UK MoD, the Wagner Group has now taken control of most of the  eastern part of the city, with a river running through the center of the city  marking the new front line.

The capture of Bakhmut is a key objective of the month-long Russian campaign in eastern Ukraine, which has resulted in staggering casualties on both sides. But Britain's Ministry of Defense  notes that it will be "a major challenge" for Wagner's forces to advance further, as the Ukrainian army has destroyed key bridges across the river and turned the thin strip of open ground in the middle into a "death zone". ". "Ukrainian sniper fire from fortified buildings further west  also complicated the situation  for Wagner's forces.

Despite these challenges, Wagner's chief Yevgeny Prigozhin has announced that his troops are near the center of the front line at Bakhmut. In a video posted to messaging app Telegram, Prigozhin stands on the roof of a skyscraper in Bakhmut and points to what he says is the building of the city government in the distance. He also announced that he would stand in next year's presidential elections, not in Russia, as has been speculated, but  in Ukraine.

Wagner led offensives against towns in eastern Ukraine in  the longest and bloodiest battles of the year-long Russian onslaught. Both sides have taken heavy casualties around Bakhmut, and Ukrainian troops and supply lines in the mining town remain vulnerable to continued Russian attempts to outflank the northern and southern defenders.

The recent events in Bakhmut mark a clear escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has been going on since 2014. The conflict began with Russia's annexation of Crimea  and has since expanded into a broader conflict in eastern Ukraine, where separatist forces have been backed by Russia. Despite several ceasefires and peace agreements, the conflict continues and has resulted in the deaths of thousands  on both sides.

The capture of Bakhmut by the Wagner group is a major blow to Ukraine and could potentially lead to a further escalation of the conflict. The international community, including the United Nations and Western countries, has condemned Russia's actions in eastern Ukraine and has imposed sanctions in response. However, it remains to be seen whether these measures will be enough to prevent the conflict from spiraling out of control.
