South Korea dispatched around 80 warplanes after nearly 180 radar tracks from North Korean warplanes were spotted near the countries' eastern and western sea borders, the South Korean military said on Friday, in the latest sign of escalating tensions after successive missile launches from Pyongyang.

Pyongyang has vigorously protested the Vigilant Storm air exercise and fired a barrage of ballistic missiles on Wednesday and Thursday.
The joint exercise was originally scheduled to take place Monday through Friday, but was extended due to heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula following North Korean missile launches. According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, it was extended by one day.
