Shanghai's former party leader Li Qiang, a Xi confidant, has been promoted to No. 2, making it likely that he will be appointed prime minister at the government's annual term next March. The other members of the Standing Committee are Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang and Li Xi, according to Xinhua News. Since taking over the country a decade ago, Xi has achieved a concentration of power unmatched by any modern Chinese ruler save Mao. In 2018, he abolished the two-term presidential limit, paving the way for him to rule indefinitely. Xi has also overseen China's rise to become the world's second-largest economy, a huge military buildup, and a much more aggressive global stance that has met strong opposition from the United States.

Despite near-unbridled power, Xi faces daunting challenges over the next five years, including managing the  debt-ridden nation and growing rivalry with the  US on Sunday, he told reporters and journalists  that "China cannot develop without the world , and the world  needs China too." "After more than 40 years of tireless reform and opening-up efforts, we have achieved two miracles: rapid economic development and long-term social stability," he said.
