A bomb explosion near a checkpoint at Kabul's military airport on Sunday morning resulted in several deaths and injuries, according to a Taliban official.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Islamic State in Khorasan Province, a regional affiliate of the Islamic State group, has increased its attacks in Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover in 2021.
These attacks have targeted both Taliban patrols and members of Afghanistan's Shiite minority.
The military airport is located approximately 200 meters from the civilian airport and is close to the Interior Ministry, which was itself the site of a suicide bombing in October that killed at least four people. Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Nafi Takor confirmed that the blast resulted in several deaths and injuries, but did not provide any specific numbers or further details about the bombing. An investigation is ongoing.
Although Taliban security forces prevented photography and filming at the blast site, the checkpoint appeared to be damaged but intact. It is located on Airport Road, which leads to high-security neighborhoods that house government ministries, foreign embassies, and the presidential palace. A spokesperson for the Kabul police chief was not immediately available for comment. This bombing marks the first deadly attack of 2023 in Afghanistan
