President Joe Biden has said the United States would defend Taiwan militarily if China invaded the self-governing island, but on Monday he said he had told Chinese President Xi Jinping at a summit in Indonesia that "our One China Policy That Hasn't Changed," which assumes Taiwan is part of Beijing's domain.

Taiwan has sent billions of dollars in military aid to  defend itself despite recognizing Chinese control, in what is known in the United States as a policy of "strategic ambiguity." Biden said his talks with Xi have been "frank and frank." ' and that the two leaders discussed their countries' 'intents and priorities' on a variety of issues. He said the result, in which Biden's Democrats fare substantially better than pre-election predictions, was a "major backlash" from Republican candidates who backed former President Donald Trump's claim that Trump was one step ahead in the 2020 presidential election tenure in the House of Representatives election that Biden won.

Biden called the peaceful vote a "strong rejection of political violence and voter intimidation." He described the result as "a strong statement that  the will of the people in America has prevailed.

Biden's Democrats will retain their narrow majority in the Senate when the new Congress is sworn in next January. Political control of the House of Representatives is still unclear. , with Biden expressing doubts that the Democrats can close a slim Republican lead as the
 vote count continues.
